Vortex
Generators
April 2005 - Now that I
uncovered the problem with my intake air to the engine being restricted, I
figure I may see higher than wanted CHT and oil temperatures when running full
throttle. I was as high as I wanted to be previously so I decided to install
some vortex generators to the bottom of the plane in front of the NACA scoop.
Others who have done a similar installation report much improved cooling. I made
my own VG's out of fiberglass and attached them to the fuselage with silicon. I
had wanted to do some before and after tests to measure the cooling effect, but
decided to play it safe and install them for my first flight after the new cowls
were installed. After some initial flights, I'll do the testing to get real
numbers. Here's a couple of pictures of the VG's as first
installed. I may reduce the size of them, remove some (or all) of them or
re-position them before the testing is all said and done.
